Having used the cottage as a holiday home for a number of years, the owners wanted to extend and alter it so they could move in permanently. With teenage children their brief was to enlarge the living and bedroom spaces, without reducing the size of the rear garden or losing the charm of the front elevation.
Believed to date from the same period as the attached Chapel. Our proposals needed to be sympathetic to it's central position within the village and its prominent corner plot.
After looking into the clients initial idea of altering and extending into the roof, we suggested a completely different approach; that of building a 2-storey extension at the front of the property. The side elevations & section show the proposed gabled extension to the front. The high-level gable window with glass set within an oak frame hints that the extension is new.
The annotated floor plans show how by extending to the front we were able to create a good-sized sitting room with separate snug on the ground floor. Whilst the enlarged first floor could accommodate a master suite, a generous guest bedroom & extended children's bedrooms.
'Rights of Light' for the adjacent Chapel were addressed in the Planning application documents to prove that the neighbouring chapel would not be adversely affected. The application was supported by the Parish Council with no local objections.
