This project involved the redevelopment of an existing Mental Health hospital. Changes in models of care and environmental standards, made it difficult to bring the existing building up to modern standards. Our final scheme met the brief of maximising the site value and retaining a healthcare use.
On a sloping site, the existing buildings ranged in age and style from the later part of the 20th century to 1990’s .
A 3D model was used to investigate if some, or all of the existing buildings could be retained.
Once it became clear that this wasn't practical from an environmental or therapeutic standpoint, we then looked at new build options that worked with the site's constraints.
The final scheme involved the demoliton of the original buildings, and the construction of a 78 bed Care Home and 5 dwellings.
The Care home has back of house areas and staff parking built into the higher part of the site, and 2 separate garden (on the lower ground and ground floors), also take advantage of the level change.
The new dwellings abut existing housing at the lowest part of the site.
With a level change of 6m across its length, we used simple 'white card' massing models to help explain how the building worked with the site contours and surrounding road levels.
Knowledge and best practice for designing for people with Dementia informs all our Care Home designs.
The entrance level incorporates a spacious cafe/reception with bar area, hair & beauty salon, physiotherapy room, Spa Bathroom, Cinema, fine dining room and an art activity room.
Also on this floor are office space and back of house areas, and a 13-bed community with its own lounge/dining/activity
