Whilst with Househam Henderson Architects, Caroline worked as project Architect for this scheme taking it from Planning through to completion on site. The finished scheme won a major national Healthcare award.
Winthrop Hall was a 3000 sqm specialist residential addiction clinic, built in kent.
The clients ambition was to create a state-of-the facility where the building would make a positive contribution to the recovery of the residents.
Although a large building, the main entrance was designed to feel human scale and welcoming, as many residents would be in crisis on admission.
Good natural lighting & natural ventilation was designed for, throughout. The 'chimney stacks' of the natural 'stack' ventilation system can be seen here punctuating the flat roofs, some of which are green roofs and some of which are used for rainwater harvesting.
Large roof overhangs and brise soleil prevent overheating in the summer, whilst taking advantage of passive solar gain in the winter. Large windows from the gym & physiotherapy rooms overlook the gardens and woodland.
The scheme won Building Better Health Care’s ‘Best Sustainable Building’ 2008 & achieved Breeam ‘Very Good’ for environmental design.
